Graduate Scholars

The IFS runs an annual Graduate Scholarship Programme, whereby students studying for a PhD on an accredited pathway at an ESRC doctoral training centre are affiliated with the IFS. Students will usually be based at University College London.

IFS Scholars, who will be expected to have already been awarded a masters degree, will work on their PhDs, and will have access to the extensive research facilities of the IFS, sitting alongside IFS researchers and associated academics. There is flexibility as to what stage the candidates are at in the PhD when they take up the funding and as to how many years will be funded.

At the Institute, they will be associated with the ESRC Centre for Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy (CPP). The IFS has established an international reputation in microeconometrics and empirical microeconomics research and its relation to policy issues. Scholars’ research should be relevant to these areas; opportunities to work with IFS researchers on relevant projects may arise, but it is expected that scholars will work primarily on the own doctoral research. They are welcome to attend IFS internal seminars and other events.

Fees, stipends and other support are paid in accordance with ESRC rates and guidelines applicable at the time (for details, see the ESRC's website for details).

Applications for 2018 will be accepted from October 2017.
